Fond memories of singing They Might Be Giants songs like "Istanbul is Constantinople", "Birdhouse in your Soul" and "Don't Let's Start" warm my heart. They were something new and different to me like the Butthole Surfers or Ween. Nerds armed with accordions teaching geography lessons? Yes please.

Since their inception in the early 1980's, the two Johns ( Linnell and Flansburgh) have, in many ways, paved the way for nerdy alternative rockers. Combining razor sharp wit with off the wall humor and peculiarly authentic musicianship, TMBG had their moment in the limelight in the early days of MTV.

They remain today as low key legends of true pioneering in the world of alternative music.

Yet they've had immense success releasing two albums of children's music. One garnered a Grammy award and a second Grammy was awarded to the duo in 2002 for "You're not the Boss of Me", the theme song of TV show Malcolm in the Middle.

Tis the season for a serious lack of attendance-worthy original music in the area, hence the tribute bands such as Led Zeppelin copycats, Zoso - performing January 13 and 14 atThe Lincoln Theater in Raleigh - and Abbey Road (take a wild guess who they parrot) are simultaneously performing at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. So, basically you can tell yourself The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are playing the same two nights in your town. And deciding which one to go see will be a decision made based solely on the deepest and most serious meditation. Beatles or Zep? Beatles or Zep? Maybe I could make it to the Beatles and Led Zeppelin in the same night! Why not?

I had the pleasure of catching ZOSO several years ago at a private party and noted the Robert Plant playing front man behaved as if he were actually the man himself; demanding drink, drugs and women to be delivered to him at once! As if he and Jimmy, Bonzo, and the boys had just skidded down the runway in their private 747. Sorry pal, there might be some left over Cheeto Dust in the van next to the Bush Lite and sleeping bags.

It's not that I don't appreciate the value of a band thriving on the creativity and art of others artists. Music is something of a shared endeavor anyway. And, if these tribute or cover bands make people jump for joy in nostalgic ecstasy, more power to them. I just feel that the characters being played should simply be left on stage with the memories.

Humorist, music journalist and Author Chuck Klosterman does a bang up job describing tribute bands in an essay included in Chuck Klosterman IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas. I highly recommed reading this essay, if not all of his work

All together, the music of Carboro's Organos creates a sparse landscape with each note of each instrument and vocal separate from each other. Singer Maria Albani's deadpan delivery blends well with the minimal selection of accompanying sounds and tastefully puts her "ha's" and "huff's" in the right spot. Comedian, actor, writer, and all around humorist Michael Ian Black is bringing his comical observations to the Carolina Theater in Durham December 2nd. Many may remember Black from his days on MTV as a member of The State, one of the forerunners of alternative sketch comedy post SNL. Black has remained in the comedy world as a member of Stella, a modern Three Stooges like troop which includes fellow State member Michael Showalter and David Wain. All three have stuck together over the years creating some truly hilarious films such as Wet Hot American Summer and The Baxter. Black's stand up comedy routine doesn't come close to his talent as a comedic actor, but the show will be pleasing nonetheless.

Sam Prekop and his outfit The Sea and Cake are part of a movement from the 1990's which combined jazz improvisation with modern day electronics and synthesizers to add a certain element of modernism to an antiquated form of musicianship. Within the records and live shows from the Sea and Cake, the jazz combo feel is ever present but stretches off into alternative dimensions with the new technology. See The Sea and Cake at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill this Friday November 11.

Australian indie synth pop outfit Architecture in Helsinki appeared on the radar in 2007 as part of a fresh musical genre which meshed an array of instruments, both musical and electronic, which provided a danceable form of pop music combined with strong songwriting, pushing them far above many other groups attempting to pull off the same magic. AIH made a big splash in US putting them on tour with acts as big as Talking Heads front man David Byrne, Yo La Tango, and Belle and Sebastian. Several years ago I was accidentally introduced to the delightfully geeky music of Wilson, NC's Bombadil and been fascinated since. My plan was to check out The Old Ceremony for the first time at The Martin Street Music Hall ( now Kings) for a review. Walking into the club, I was immediately hypnotized by the opening band, dressed in an unusually spectacular manner. If memory serves, they were sporting marching band attire. They Might Be Giants came to mind, but the sound and vision provided was something refreshingly new and exciting to me. Bombadil played the catchy and adorable "Jellybean Wine" and I was hooked. I've watched them from a distance for the last 5 years and they've blossomed creatively and matured as a unit with 10 years of performing and recording under their collective belt.

Be there for the release of their 4th record, All That the Rain Promises, Saturday November 12 at Cat's Cradle.

M83 at KINGS BARCADE SATURDAY NIGHT HALLOWEEN WEEKEND 2011

As much as I would like to dress up as Joan Cusack's character from sixteen candles, I don't think the seamstress in me could whip up a balarina sweater in time. However, I may put on a leotard and go as the White Swan. Either way I will be a woman.

Entertainment of the musical variety this weekend is abundant, with one show really worth talking about. M83, named after a galaxy or something, come from France and fall under the "Shoegaze" genre which stems from bands who gaze at their shoes while playing. It also describes lightly sung lyrics over brash instrumentation. These Frenchman have gained alarming success in the past five years or so in the US appealing to the younger indie rock crowd who now prefer a little techno in their rock. As much as I despise the word "Indie", M83 can be described as such. But, they put on one hell of a show, perfect for a Halloween weekend.

Also performing this weekend in downtown Raleigh is a truly original local outfit called Strange Lady. Catch them at White Collar Crime Saturday night!

British indie rock outfit Arctic Monkeys formed in 2002 and by 2006 were on a meteoric rise to fame. The release of Whatever People Say I am I'm Not garnered record breaking sales in Great Britain and quickly thrust the band into the stratosphere somewhere between The Strokes and Cold Play. An appearance on Saturday Night Live was their high water mark as the rest of the indie culture exploded with bands forming exponentially all over the US and Britain. Not to say The Arctic Monkeys are any better or worse for the ware, but their popularity has evened out to a level manageable enough to have them on stage at The Disco Rodeo as apposed to say the RBC Center.

Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks at The Haw River Ballroom Saturday October 1 Reveiw

Stephen Malkmus, founder of the exalted and highly influential band Pavement - and an equally deified solo artist - came to visit our corner of the world last Saturday night for a show at The Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC, just 10 minutes away from Chapel Hill. Originally the dye house in historic Saxapahaw’s cotton mill, the venue is part of an elegant structure which also features a restaurant and coffee bar on other levels. As far as sound and structure, the first floor was perfect for Stephen Malkmus, The Jicks, and almost any other act they choose to host down the line.

The always sarcastic and borderline smarmy Malkmus and his band The Jicks ran through a good deal of tracks from their latest record Mirror Traffic. Displaying precision and the correct dose of improvisation, the talents of each band member were nicely drawn. But the hold on the audience was cast from the lofty heights of the man singing the songs. He’s a brilliant person and a fine musician - and he knows it.

Fans were exhilarated (myself included) for rousing renditions of older tunes such as “Real Emotional Trash”, from the album of the same name, the raucous “Baby C’mon’ and the upbeat adventurous groove of “The Hook”. Trading sarcastic chatter with blonde bassist Johanna Bolme, and ripping solos with guitarist and keyboardist Mike Clark, the connectivity of The Jicks surrounded him like a suit of armor. Stephen Malkmus can wax smart ass and dodge a bullet while playing a song. And The Jicks could too. Moments of improvisation, such as bits from “Deal” by The Grateful Dead and the Doors’ “Mojo Risin” popped in during Real Emotional Trash, dramatized the group’s ever-present solidarity in the face of Steve’s whimsy.

All bands have that, I suppose, but to stay on point with Malkmus takes guts. They encored with a cover of the 1970’s classic “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass, which had the crowd going nuts, but then brought it down for a heart wrenching “Trojan Curfew”, an adored song from his first album sans Pavement. The show concluded with Jimmy Hendrix’s rock anthem “Wild Thing” retooled with lyrical changes from Malkmus and teases of Simon and Garfunkle’s “Feelin’ Groovy”-another homerun return from a Steven Malkmus curveball.

Who knew that just up the road from our fair city lies a community seeping with musicality? Saxapahaw, NC on Haw River is home to Yep Rock Records (Apples in Stereo, Liam Finn, Chuck Prophet) and the soon to be famous Haw River Ballroom. I hate to admit that I had never heard of it before this year when it was announced that former Pavement leader and alt. rock demigod Stephen Malkmus was set to perform there Saturday October 1.

Malkmus, rare bird that he is, is playing where? Not at Cat's Cradle, or The Lincoln Theater, or even the dreaded Disco Rodeo? No, the crowned prince of Pavement chose a more idyllic setting for his show in the peaceful and rural landscape just north of Chapel Hill. I personally cannot wait to experience a musician and songwriter of such magnitude at a venue so quaint.

Since the dissolution of Pavement, Stephen Malkmus has gone on to define kick-ass alternative rock and roll music with that unmistakable “yeah whatever”, back talky attitude with top shelf musicianship in each of his solo records. Since 2001, he and his newest band, The Jicks, have released 5 exceptional albums including their latest Mirror Traffic( produced by Beck!)

Award winning singer songwriter Lizzy Ross has made her mark as a tried and true North Carolinian musician not to be taken lightly. Friday's lineup is loaded with bands I have never heard, which is exciting. Aside from Raleigh's The Annuals, Singer Songwriter John Vanderslice, and a handful of others, I am clueless. However, there is one band I can not wait to experience: Guided By Voices. Led by famous alcoholic Robert Pollard, GBV paved the way and created the template for scores of alternative and independent bands. Known for their brilliant under 2 minute songs, lo fi sound, and wild stage antics (Pollard especially), GBV released volumes of work over their twenty some odd career. Formed in 1983 and disbanded in 2004, the band is back and playing at Raleigh City Plaza at 8:40. Unreal.

Also performing at City Plaza before GBW:Southern rock storytellers The Drive By Truckers and San Francisco indie outfit The Dodo's.

HOPSCOTCH MUSIC FESTIVAL 2011 IS HERE!

That's right folks, the second annual Hopscotch Music Festival cranks up tomorrow with around 50 musical acts from all over the country performing in clubs and venues strewn across the downtown Raleigh area. This event is monumental in that Raleigh's history will be forever changed because such an eclectic celebration of music is happening and will continue to grow right here. This festival is certainly easy to describe as an "indie" music festival, but I see it as much more. It is, in fact, a declaration that Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel hill is a fertile breeding ground for the past , present, and future of music. Bands and fans should not only recognize that fact, but also flock to our great city to take part in such an occasion.

I look forward to absorbing as much new music as humanly possible which should be no problem, as I've hardly heard 1/3 of them, save a a single off of a blog or on 88.1.

Chapel Hill's Spider Bags are set to play the Lincoln Theater as well as Raleigh's the Love Language-two bands who have made waves in the triangle and beyond. Atlanta's Black Lips are "headlining" if you chose to use that word, but I'm guessing the theatrical punk rockers from Georgia are stoked to share the stage with their triangle brethren.

Over at Fletcher Opera Hall , singer songwriter Steve Gunn, composer and avaunt guard musician Rhys Chatham, Australian cult band The Necks and Dinosaur Juinor's Jay Mascis are on the bill. This lineup exemplifies the fact that this music festival is not pigeonholed by one single genre.

The Pour House welcomes Prurient, Oneohtrix Point Never, Weekend, and Cold Cave. these bands fall under the experimental and synth pop genres, so If you're into chilled out techo brushed beats and the like, I suggest camping out at The Pour House.

From Austin, Texas Ghostland Observatory melds electronic synth and funk- compatible melodies with an ultra trippy light show which brings audiences into a dance frenzy not dissimilar to something you might see at a Daft Punk performance. The duo shouts lyrics, but rely mostly on the computer/synthesizer, drums, occasional guitar, and overwhelming lights to get from start to finish. If Thin Lizzy and Bruce Springsteen had a baby, it would be Brooklyn's The Hold Steady. Since 2004, Craig Finn, Tad Kubler, Galen Polivka, Bobby Drake, and Steve Selvige have been tearing through cities putting on one of the most originally raucous live shows around. Their style of storytelling before a backdrop of full throttle classic rock inspired sound is one of a kind. No topic is taboo within the narrative of The Hold Steady, giving them an R to X rated edge. I caught them at The Cat's Cradle about 4 years ago and vividly remember thinking to myself how much I'd love to see them in a small bar somewhere. My interest in Kurt Vile began with a suggestion from friends whose taste in music I trust when I must admit I'm getting weary of all these new bands - the lines are starting to blur I suppose ,or maybe I'm getting old and crotchety.

I finally decided to give Vile's Smoke Ring for My Halo a spin and was instantaneously lured into the dark corners of his psyche. I appreciated his bitterness while paralyzed by the simple yet swirling musicianship in each song. His dialect seems untraceable, not by region, but by time. After I had listened to "On Tour" for the millionth time, making sure I had the lyrics: "watch out for this one, he'll pump you full of lead for turning your head wrong".

They were absolutely right, and in sync with my car singing voice (which is amazing, btw). Then I put two and two together: Kurt Vile is a nom de plume borrowed from the great German composer, Kurt Weill. And it all came together - the societal remarks from my new Kurt compared to 1920's Kurt Weills’s socialist commentary from The Threepenny Opera began to connect.

I don't think the Kurt Vile playing at The Cat's Cradle Tuesday August 9 draws a great deal of influence from Kurt Weill, but it's astonishingly satisfying to know the history. Maybe I'll get lucky and hear "Mack the Knife" next Tuesday.

The one and only Steely Dan are performing this Thursday evening at the DPAC in Durham on their SHUFFLE DIPLOMACY 2011 TOUR. I've been an avid fan of the ever changing genius-centric outfit since high school, attracted primarily to the masterfully produced jazz rock elements of their seemingly perfect albums. The older I got the more I realized that if I could live within the lyrics of any band , it would be those of Steely Dan. An endless sex laden adventure through episodes of danger, secrecy, open joy, and more sex, all while wearing a perfectly fitting tux and a black limousine as my chariot? Yes Please.

We haven't heard any new material from the wizards behind the curtain (Donald Fagen and Walter Becker) in quite some time, so guessing from shows past, we will get a few hours of anything and everything from the immaculate Steely Dan Cannon. I hope to hear "Pearl of the Quarter" or basically anything else from their 1973 release, "Countdown to Ecstasy." Touring and performing with the boys this time around: The Miles High Band featuring the Embassy Brats.

In case you are staying in town this weekend, avoiding the mad rush of beach people doused in booze and sunscreen, a rare opportunity awaits in Durham Sunday night. British singing sensation David Gray will perform his inspired mix of acoustic rock with touches of the electronic here and there. His most recognizable and successful album, White Ladder, best symbolizes his style as a singer/songwriter. Songs like "Babylon" and "Sail Away" quickly made his voice as recognizable as Dave Matthews or other musical giants played heavily on the radio during the late 90's/ early 2000's. Gray's voice is comparable to some of the greatest singers of our time, due mostly to his amazingly wide vocal range which reaches new heights with each song he performs. The Vermont quartet is set to return to the area June 18 for another evening of noodle friendly funk and improvisational rock. Trey, Mike, Fish and Page have ruled the jam scene since Jerry Garica's death in 1994 when hordes of wandering hippies needed a new act to follow. Not to say there isn't any merit to the music of Phish, because there is. Tons in fact. Since the 1989 release of Junta, a double disc collection of some of the bands lasting anthems, Phish has steadily released studio albums, many better than others in my opinion.

Tracks from A Picture of Nectar, Story of the Ghost, Hoist and Billy Breathes pack the most punch and certainly get the most airplay live. The thing about Phish shows is this: how much you may like or dislike songs from their albums is irrelevant as each song can be completely tampered with for your enjoyment - or to your dismay. Many music know-it-alls cast aspersions at bands in this genre simply due to the fact the music tends to go on and on for much longer than they like, while many phans eat that up. Basically, you never know what you're gonna’ get.

After public embarrassment due to a 2006 DWI and a controlled substance charge against guitar god Trey Anastasio - and the realization that their shows were suffering because of such things - Phish threw in the towel. It is my opinion that the band returned to the stage and the scene in 2009 rejuvenated and dedicated to being the best they can be. Why throw away a career in which millions are made and you have thousands of people following you around the country to see you play?

London foursome Mumford and Sons have swept the nation with their moody harmonies, folky instrumentation, and rich wordplay driving the ladies crazy... and the dudes too. Since their introduction to the world, Marcus Mumford, "Country" Winston Marshall, Ben Lovette, and Ted Dwayne have successfully captured the love and attention of audiences both in the UK and the US.

With the help of producer Marcus Dravs ( Arcade Fire, Bjork, Brian Eno), the four friends' debut album Sigh No More contained just the right stuff to wow the world. Hits such as "The Cave", "Little Lion Man" and "Winter Winds" blare from the Ipod buds and speakers of college kids, 20 and 30 somethings, and baby boomers alike. In fact, my mother asked me who they were just the other day , and something like that hasn't happened since the 90's when she wanted to know who "Grunge" was.

Judging from their exponentially growing popularity, Mumford and Sons' performance at The Raleigh Downtown Amphitheater this Wednesday will most likely be a one shot deal. Next year they could be at the RBC center if Raleigh is even of their schedule.

Marsh Woodwinds is a simple store on Person Street in downtown Raleigh selling musical instruments of the woodwind variety- saxophones, clarinets, etc. The friendly owner holds dear the sanctity of his space and believes strongly in providing the community with a welcoming venue to relax and enjoy local music, especially jazz. My one visit to Marsh Woodwinds left me speechless as if I discovered a secret. I quickly realized the uniqueness of the upstairs venue, the atmosphere created by the music and the overwhelming hospitality from the proprietor. All I really feel comfortable saying is this: If you come see Matt Douglas and Chris Boerner's jazz outfit, The Hot at Nights, this Friday evening at Marsh Woodwinds, come prepared to respect the rare environment and enjoy the music. Bassist and eccentric (to put it mildly) Les Claypool is a proud representative of the ugly underground from which a great deal of the greatest music in history is created. His primary group, Primus, has abashedly constructed sounds and visions strange enough to freak people out, but also great enough to keep the band in the limelight for years at a time. If you watch South Park, you should know that the opening song was written and performed by Claypool. Now Primus is out in support of their first album together in twelve years, set for release sometime this year Get your tickets now for Primus at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh May 31st.

I remember being alone at my parents’ beach condo when I was very young and the video for “Mr. Krinkle” came on MTV and it scared the living shit out of me. A pig man playing stand up bass? At that point the novelty was more enticing than the music, which turned around quickly when I was older and braver. Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda were the two albums which held the highest content of ripping musicianship, dark humor and style that set Claypool, drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander and guitarist Larry LeLonde apart from anything I had ever heard.

Primus, although deranged in appearance, had major success in the 1980's and 90's with hits such as "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver", "My Name is Mud" and "Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver." Also, Claypool's style as a bassist is percussive in many ways. He can slap the strings with his thumb (which, according to legend, has a spring implant) creating a sound similar to a drum roll.

You may remember Claypool teaming with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and Police drummer Stewart Copeland to form Oysterhead. The trio made made one record, The Grand Pecking Order, and toured ferociously, playing to the jam band crowd who hilariously tangled with Primus's hard core fans. Other projects Les Claypool formed include Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, which was made up of drummer "Brain", anonymous and frightening guitar virtuoso Bucket Head and former Parliament Funkadelic and Talking Heads keyboardist Bernie "Woo" Worrel. His touring band as a soloist - Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade toured in the early 2000's during Primus's hiatus.

Interpol at Disco Rodeo 5-4-2011 - Quick review.

Interpol blew the rusty doors off of the grimy hovel that is The Disco Rodeo last evening. Right from the get-go, The New York based quintet feverishly delivered their signature pulse pounding brand of dark indie rock. Although the sound at the former Ritz theater was and always is atrocious, the bands sound engineer made it work. Hardly a second of rest was taken by any of the band members, save the time between the last number and the triple encore. Paul Banks' vocals were in top form as was the quick paced guitar styling of Daniel Kessler. Adding just the right amount of lurid electricity to the sound of Interpol live , Brandon Curtis ( formerly of The Secret Machines) contributed his talent on vocals and keyboards. We were very lucky to hear tracks from their third (and my favorite) record , Antics, including "Evil" and "Slow Hand" as well an array of powerful songs from other studio efforts, both old and new. Judging from the high energy, razor sharp performance last night at The Disco Rodeo, Interpol is moving full steam ahead, forging their place in musical history as a true standout in the the world of alternative rock.

Pennsylvania native Brian McGee combines folk, rock, country, punk, and soul to form his own brand of Americana rock. For three years, members of Washington, DC based indie band, The Moderate , have worked hard with others to pull together another evening of live music, friends, and fund raising. This year the benefit also welcomes local alternative ensemble Wembley , along with singer / songwriter David Titchner.

Please do your best to make it to the Pour House this Friday evening. All proceeds go directly to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, a facility dedicated to saving the lives of children dealt such a hard hand so early in life.

The Hot at Nights Bio ( not written by yours truly / too good to not just cut and paste) :

Says one Carolina newbie to one Carolina native, "Dang! I knew it would be hot in the Summer down here, but I had no idea that it would get even hotter at night!!" Meteorologically speaking, there is a scientific explanation for this phenomenon. But as far as the Raleigh-based exploratory jazz trio called The Hot at Nights, there is no explanation for them. 8-string guitar virtuoso Chris Boerner leads the group, with Matt Douglas on sax/woodwinds and Nick Baglio on drums. The group melted together in Boerner's studio over the many sweltering evenings of Summer, 2010. Though largely improvisational, the group's compositions pull from contemporary songwriters, classic funk, pop, rock, and of course the electric avant garde stylings that have spanned the last 30 years of contemporary jazz. Complex rhythms can quickly transform into head-bobbing groove fare. Simple melodies coaxed by all three players can explode into cacophonous meteor showers at the drop of a dime. Their limits go as high as the stratosphere and deep into the Earth's mantle. Both of which keep them sweating... even after the sun goes down.

Former front man and voice of British "rock gods" Led Zeppelin , Robert Plant, is making a stop in Raleigh Wednesday February 2nd at Memorial Auditorium here in Raleigh. Since the break up of Led Zeppelin , Plant has maintained an on again off again relationship with music, sometimes coming as close as possible to a full on Zep reunion, which would of course be impossible because of the death of drummer John Bonham. He and guitarist Jimmy Page worked together on a few projects, but that Zeppelin magic had gotten out of the bottle, never to be captured again. In 2008 Plant collaborated with hugely talented bluegrass singer and fiddle player Alison Krauss to create Raising Sand, an album which garnered the duet 5 Grammy Awards. The Band of Joy (the original name of Plants pre-zeppelin band) is said to be a tasteful combination of the power and the tenderness Robert Plant brings out through the musicians with whom he surrounds himself.

Since their formation in 1982 in New Jersey, Yo La Tengo (spanish for "I have it" or I got her") has sat comfortably in that imaginary roped off lounge with bands like Sonic Youth and Luna. Right around the time The Strokes were rocketing toward stardom as the symbol of a new awakening in rock music, that welcome change was also defined by a few other key young bands, including New York's The Walkmen.

Since their formation in 2000, the quintet has released six studio albums including the critically acclaimed Bows and Arrows which landed them a spot on the ultra popular teen mellow- drama The O.C. Their sound is reminiscent of that time in the early part of the last decade when distortion and hard down strokes in 5/4 time signature were mandatory; but The Walkmen's ability to isolate certain sounds and manipulate the musical atmosphere always put them ahead of the rest. Experimentation with folksier arrangements and the use of horns and older instruments have kept The Walkme n producing fresh sounds for us to enjoy.

Lisben, their latest record, released in September of 2010 impressed audiences and wowed critics.

Jerry Joseph is part of a large familiar guild of musicians, singers, and songwriters including master instrumentalist David Lindley of the 1970's psychedelic outfit Kaleidescope. Many know Joseph through his connection to Widespread Panic bassist David Schools through their band Stockholm Syndrome as well his own group The Jackmormons. Joseph is currently touring with friend and collaborator, percussionist Wally Ingram.

I can't figure out if you pronounce MGMT as "management" or if I should just say the letters. Either way, Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh welcomes the Brooklyn juggernauts to the stage this Wednesday evening. Since 2007, MGMT has made a name for themselves all over the world working with acts like MIA and opening for Paul McCartney. Their second record, Oracular Spectacular, debuted at number 11 on Great Britain's pop charts, went on to earn a Grammy nomination and placed high on the "best" lists of many reputable music magazines. After hearing their latest release , Congratulations, it looks like MGMT's meteoric rise to fame has only begun.

Indecision can be categorized as a jam band in league at one time with Widespread Panic, but in my opinion they are so much more. They represent a time in the lives of many people when things were alright and being carefree was just as important as being careful is today. For some it was college or high school or maybe their late twenties. I fell in love with the song "She ain't no Betty" when I was 15. Their songs are reminiscent of a latter day Doobie Brothers and they can play the hell out of Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne". Raspy voiced soul singer Macy Gray performs this evening at the Carolina Theater in Durham. Gray's rise to fame began in the late 1990's with her hit song "I Try" which garnered 5 Grammy Awards. Gray has since offered her talents as an actress and reality television star. Behind those giant sunglasses and beneath that mop of hair lies one hell of a singer songwriter.

The Cat's Cradle welcomes no wave trio Blonde Redhead to the stage Saturday October 30th with German DJ Pantha Du Prince. Blonde Redhead's 2004 release, Misery is a Butterfly was the break out album for most listeners and in my opinion their best work.

Canadian electro - rock outfit Caribou will play Halloween night at the Cradle. I've never seen them live, but from what I understand they put on a mesmerizing performance.

Known for his deadpan delivery and mellow disposition, comedian Todd Barry will be telling jokes at Kings Barcade Thursday evening. He appeared regularly on VH1's Best Week Ever, The Late show with David Letterman, and as a guest on various sitcoms.

Alternative country songstress and Raleigh native Jeanne Jolly is sweating it out, performing 3 times a day, every day at the North Carolina State Fair October 14th - 24th. If you have not had a chance to witness Jolly, by all means take advantage of this opportunity to do so. She and her band can be seen on the waterfall stage at 12:00 , 3:00 and 6:00.

All of you Hootie and The Blowfish fans get ready! That's right, Darius Rucker will perform at the Fair on the evening of October 23rd in support of his new album Charleston, Sc 1966. In my opinion, Rucker gets points for being the first African American singer to master the "yeah" vocal styling a la Eddie Vedder and Scott Stapp. I realize comparing those two is sacrilegious as Scott Stapp is the Anti-Christ, but you get my point.

311 will perform downtown at The Raleigh Amphitheater Saturday October 30th. Hopefully your piercings from the 90's haven't healed over yet and you can locate some blue hair dye that washes out in 24 hours or before work on Monday morning. The first annual Hopscotch Music Festival is going down this weekend in downtown celebrating Raleigh’s long budding music scene in a 3-day showcase of the Triangle’s finest bands - plus a heavy handful of nationally and internationally known acts. The Independent Weekly’s Grayson Currin and a team of devoted employees and volunteers have put their blood sweat and tears into the formation of what will be a home-grown version of Austin’s South By Southwest for a whole new region.

Local acts such as Max Indian and Schooner are sharing the bill with bands of the same stature from as far away as Iceland, hoping to get a chance to play together and possibly be heard by an attending record company. The sheer magnitude of this gathering of musical artists is staggering. Over 120 bands are scheduled to perform offering nearly every genre of music. The Pour House, Tir Na Nog, The Lincoln Theater, Slim’s, Deep South, The Berkley Cafe, King’s Barcade, and The HIve at Busy Bee will host the majority of the smaller acts. The bigger draws, such as Broken Social Scene, Public Enemy and Panda Bear are slated to play on the big stage at city plaza. Get a wristband for the entire weekend or do your best to make it to as many shows as you can.

What happens when Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, The Dooby Brothers' Michael "the silver fox" McDonald, and Boz Scaggs get together for a tour? Well, I'm guessing something pretty damn good. They are calling this the Dukes of September Rhythm Review and will perform at the new Raleigh Amphitheater downtown this Saturday. The threesome teamed up back in 1991 with soul vocalist Phoebe Snow and a collection of top jazz and blues musicians for The New York Rock and Soul Review and wound up cutting a live album. I hope the same happens with the Dukes of September.

Triangle darlings, The Old Ceremony, will deliver their potent mix of period pieces, ballads, and high energy pop rock led by the always affecting Django Haskins. Carrboro's Schooner produces a blend of meditative pulsing sounds with straight ahead indie rock unlike most other bands typically lumped together with them. the bill also includes Raleigh's American Aquarium, a band which takes hints from traditional country to use as part of their concoction of rock and haunting western music with a genuinely southern identity.

Tonight, guitar God Carlos Santana performs at Walnut Creek with British rock and blues star Steve Winwood of Traffic and Blind Faith. Santana's outfit consists of impossibly talented players, including top percussionists Karl Perazzo and Raul Rekow. Known for his distinct sound - compared occasionally to jazz guitarist John McLaughlin - Carlos Santana has remained relevant over the years by recruiting chart topping pop stars, such as Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, to sing his songs. This tour will actually welcome his newest record, Guitar Heaven - the Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time, out September 21st. This album will again include Rob Thomas and a handful of other pop stars performing classic rock favorites such as Deep Purple’s "Smoke on the Water", Zeppelin’s "Whole Lotta’ Love", and AC/DC's "Back in Black."

Steve Winwood remains at the top of his game touring the world performing a well balanced mix of tunes from his days with Eric Clapton through his hits from the 80's and into the present. A canonized rock mogul, Steve Winwood's voice recalls the history of British blues inspired rock and roll.

Singer Song writer Chuck Prophet is playing the Berkley Cafe in Raleigh July 23rd. Well known and highly respected as a peer among artists of the highest ilk, including the late Warren Zevon and Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman. Green on Red, his first band enjoyed moderate success in the 1980s releasing several records to critical praise. Prophet released his first solo record, Brother Aldo, in 1990 and continued on offering new albums about once a year gaining acclaim from critics, fans and the musical community. His style is wholly American, with some suggestions of western imagery, the everyman blues and big city swagger. Many of his tunes are tales of the heart being broken or stolen and even taking the form of a hammer. Prophet's voice is gruff and beautiful at the same time, while his guitar work is melodious and tough. Songwriters would give anything to possess his talent and musicians line up to have him play on their records. Having Chuck Prophet perform at one of our small venues is a rare honor which we should recognize and celebrate. It's not every day a legendary musician of his stature breezes through town.

Chelsea Handler, the reigning queen of comedy, is coming to the Raleigh Amphitheater July 3oth as part of her Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang book tour. The Performance will surely consist of her raw, self deprecating sense of humor and racy observations on pop culture and celebrities. Handler made her first television debut on Girls Behaving Badly, a sketch comedy program showcasing woman getting themselves into ridiculous situations. It was like Jack Ass for girls with a hint of Candid Camera. Achieving minor success, Girls Behaving Badly was eventually canceled and Chelsea Handler was offered her own late night chat show on E ! - Chelsea Lately. The formula began with a short monologue by Handler followed by a round table discussion of current events ( in the world of celebrity gossip) with three top comedians, concluding with Handler interviewing a guest celebrity. Since the show began, Handler has published three best selling books: My Horizontal Life: A collection of One Night Stands, Are You There Vodka? It’s me Chelsea! And Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. Handler's success is built around her blunt honesty that leaves no subject off limits - (especially her sexual misadventures and love of alcohol), her beauty, and the simple fact that she is indeed very funny. Chelsea Handler's performance here should not be missed. I think we're all hoping she brings Chuy along for the tour.

Playing around town for the last few years and garnering attention from music lovers all over the triangle, The Love Language have reached a level of disitinction and respect on the local indie rock scene and beyond. Stuart Mclamb's far reaching vocal ability meshes perfectly with the robust instrumentation provided by the rest of the band, creating a dense ,rainy sound scape dotted with lights. Their shows are known to be quite entertaining, so try and make it out to the Cat's Cradle. The Light Pines and Shit Horse will open.
